CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The next morning I woke with tears staining my cheeks. Another stupid dream of Sophia had filled my restless night.

She hadn’t said anything in this one, but I had a feeling that either I was losing my mind, or there was a reason she kept showing up in my dreams. But in each dream she tugged me further and further down into to the cold, dark water. I couldn’t help but rub my head where I had landed on the rock the first day of swimming. Was this what had caused her to show herself? I had never seen ghosts or apparitions before now.

A soft knock on my door caused me to wipe the tears away.

My mother opened the door and blinked at me. “Why are you crying, Jaz?”

I could tell she wanted to comfort me, but held herself back. Before I thought about it, I blurted, “I just had a bad dream. No big deal.”

“This is two that I know of now. I’m really starting to worry about you,” she said, coming forward to sit on my bed. “Did something happen to cause the new nightmares?”

Yeah, I hit my head and see a murdered girl now. “It must just be the stress from the move.”

She took my hand as she noticed the pinky ring for the first time. She lifted my hand as she inspected it. “Where did you get this?”

“I found it in my locker. I was going to give it to lost and found, but I like it too much.” I pulled my hand away from hers. She didn’t need to know about the ring, about Sophia.

Mom dropped her hand and sighed. “You need to get ready for school. Your dad will be ready to leave soon. I wanted to make sure you were awake. You need to turn the ring in. It’s not right to keep it.”

The girl is dead, she won’t miss it, I thought, hating myself for it. I nodded in agreement to please her, even though I didn’t intend to turn the ring in. I felt attached to it for some reason. The ring was my only link to a girl who was a victim in this small, bizarre town. Well, besides her ghost and the weird dreams, that is.

She yanked the covers off me. “Get up and get ready.”

“I’m up! I’m up!” I cried out, slowly getting out of bed with a groan. I was tempted to say I was sick so I didn’t have to face Grayson again. However, unless you were hanging over the toilet breathing in vomit from yesterday’s leftovers, you were going to school in this house.

She left my room, and I slowly showered and put on a plaid skirt and a white button down shirt. I completed the outfit with a pair of bright pink flip-flops and straightened my wet ponytail in the mirror. After the whole Grayson thing yesterday, I wasn’t looking forward to working on the lines they may have come up with for the stupid play.
